Potential Targets: Ervin Santana

Target: Ervin Santana, RHP

2013 stats: 9-10, 3.24 ERA, 211 innings, 161 strikeouts, 51 walks with Kansas City Royals

Santana is an interesting free agent case coming off a career season in, yes, a contract year. The 31-year-old righty has had a career of ups and downs, mostly spent with the Texas Rangers' AL West rival Angels, but he's put up several good years in his nine big league seasons. He has four seasons of sub-4.00 ERAs, five seasons of 200-plus innings and five double-digit win seasons. He also gave up a world-leading 39 home runs in 2012 with the Angels before being shipped off to Kansas City.

He's definitely got stuff, and would be on the higher end of the free agent pool still available when it comes to starting pitching, but he's had a whale of a time pitching in Arlington over the course of his career, which could be a concern for bringing him to pitch with the Rangers. In his 17 career starts in Arlington, Santana has a 6.93 ERA and has given up 27 home runs.
