Martin Perez Named Rookie of the Month for August

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Martin Perez has been named Rooke of the Month for August.

Perez was perfect in August with a 5-0 record and an ERA of 3.06.  He had only 11 walks and struckout 26 batters over 35.1 innings.

In the same month, on Aug. 11, he tossed his first complete game in a 6-1 win over the Astros.

"Perez’s five-game winning streak in August made him the only Texas rookie ever to win five consecutive starts without a no-decision and he became the first Ranger overall to do so since Ryan Dempster won five straight between August 20-September 12, 2012. Additionally, it was the first five-win month ever by a rookie in Club history and it is just the fourth time a Rangers pitcher has gone 5-0 in a month with zero no-decisions, joining Rick Helling (5-0 in 5 GS in April 1998), Aaron Sele (5-0, 5 GS in April 1998) and Kenny Rogers (6-0 in 6 GS in May 2005)," the team said in a news release Wednesday.

The pitcher has been equally good so far in September. On Tuesday night, Perez got another win after striking out five in 7 solid innings in a 5-1 win over Oakland.

Perez is the sixth Ranger to win Rookie of the Month honors and the second this season.  In April, RHP Justin Grimm received the award -- prior winners were Gerald Laird (April 2004), RHP Frank Francisco (Aug. 2004), RHP Neftali Feliz (Sept. 2010), RHP Yu Darvish (Aug. 2012).
