Lewis To Test Free-Agent Market

Somehow Colby Lewis wasn’t the comeback player of the year. And now he might not even come back at all.

Even though the Rangers have offered the veteran pitcher a major-league deal, Lewis has decided to at least test the free-agent market.

“We've had dialogue there,” Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels said Friday on a conference call. “Not able to reach an agreement. It doesn't mean we won’t at some point down the line, but he’s going to test the market, and I think you know I have a ton of respect for Colby as a player and as a person. The door is open and if it works for both of us at a later point. But he’s going to test the market right now.”

After major hip surgery, Lewis signed a one-year deal with Texas last spring, then surprisingly led the te4am with 10 wins. If all arms are healthy, he’s a No. 5 starter in Arlington.

But if he gets a decent offer elsewhere – he shares an agent with new Cubs’ manager Joe Maddon – the 35-year-old might have thrown his last pitch for the Rangers.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986. He’s held prominent roles on all media platforms including newspaper (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer), radio (105.3 The Fan) and TV (co-host on TXA 21 and numerous guest appearances, including NBC 5). He currently lives in McKinney with his wife, Sybil, and two very spoiled dogs.
