Lewis Desperate for Good Outing

The last time Colby Lewis pitched in Oakland, it was his last outing for nearly two years.

It was the scene of the crime, so to say, of Lewis' elbow finally giving in in July 2012, requiring surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon that was followed a year later by hip resurfacing surgery.

On Monday night, Lewis returns to the mound at O.Co Coliseum looking not only to exorcise that demon, but to get the Texas Rangers off to a good start in a pivotal series against the first-place A's. To do that, and to have a part in it, he'll have to finally notch his first quality start of the season.

Six innings and three or fewer earned runs. That's something Lewis hasn't accomplished since June 2012, and he's looking to turn in the Rangers' fifth straight quality start Monday, which would shatter the club's previous season high of two.

Lewis has averaged 5 1/3 innings per start in his 11 starts this season and has gone six innings just once — against Seattle on May 20 when he gave up five earned runs on nine hits in a loss.

It's obvious that Lewis hasn't gotten back what he once had before the slew of injuries hit in 2012, and it's questionable that he ever will, but he could get back on the right track in a big way with a nice outing on Monday night.
