Cubs Kris Bryant on Joey Gallo: “Gonna Be A Star In The Big Leagues”

Kris Bryant played baseball with Rangers infielder Joey Gallo growing up in Las Vegas. The Cubs all star won the World Series and the MVP last season and told me on NBC Sports Radio that Gallo could join him and their other former youth baseball teammate Bryce Harper of Washington (2015 National League MVP) as a winner of a MVP trophy.

“Yeah, absolutely. I’ve seen Joey paly for a long time. He’s still really young. It’s crazy that people don’t think he has it. He’s gonna be a star in the big leagues. He has all the power in the world. He can play all over the field. “

Gallo has made trips to the minor leagues the past two seasons. In 2016, Gallo played 102 games in Triple A Round Rock and only 17 games in the majors for Texas. This season Gallo started opening day for an injured Adrian Beltre.

Gallo looks like he’s a better version of himself and Bryant told me hasn’t lost faith in his talents, “I definitely think that Joey’s going to go on and have a really good career.”

Bryant is a full blow star in Chicago now having won the National League Rookie of the Year and MVP award in back to back seasons. He looks at his Vegas buddies and enjoying seeing them in the show as well.  “It’s really fun for me to see guys that I grew up with you know, Bryce and Joey having success..doing it on the biggest stage there is, “ Bryant said on the Newy Scruggs Show.

Some in baseball circles have wondered if the enormous early career success for Harper and Bryant has caused Gallo to place more pressure on himself than he needs.

Bryant offered up his take, “I guess that just kinda comes with being from Vegas. I mean he’s had tons of success in his own right being the player that he is.  He handles everything great. I grew up, his dad was a coach with my dad on our club team and I grew up playing with his older brother. I’ve seen Joey play for a long time you know. I know he is a special talent and I know he’s going to be a really good players for years to come.”
