Chi Chi Gonzalez Loves to Fish

Rangers pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez could not have dreamed up a better first game as a MLB pitcher -- he went more than five innings without giving up a hit in his debut in 2015.

That’s amazing when you consider he told me that he was (understandably) “really nervous” in that first MLB start.

“I was just concentrating on controlling what I could control,” Gonzalez said. “The jitters would come in, warming up in the bullpen and all that. But as soon as I threw that first pitch and it happened to be a strike, all of that went away.”

Gonzalez showed flashes as a rookie in 2015, and then he celebrated in the off-season spending almost every day doing what he is most passionate about outside of baseball: fishing.

“It’s just something I like doing, because it takes my mind away from everything,” Gonzalez said. “All you’re concentrating on is the bite of the fish.”
