With Martin the Fold, Dallas Likely Looking Defense

A good deal of intriguing defensive prospects remain on the board going into the second round

After months of mock drafts predicting that the Dallas Cowboys would select a defensive player in the first round of the draft--and a day or so of folks predicting they’d draft Johnny Manziel--the team took offensive tackle Zack Martin out of Notre Dame on Thursday night.

Entering the second round on Friday, the Cowboys are almost certainly looking to address the defensive side of the ball.

β€œI would say right now we need a defensive player more than we need an offensive player,” Jerry Jones said, per ESPN Dallas. β€œ... It’s no secret we’d like to have some defense in this draft.”

Among those who drew serious interest from the Cowboys leading up to the draft, Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald (Rams), Florida defensive tackle Dominique Easley (Patriots), Louisville safety Calvin Pryor (Jets), Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (Packers) and Northern Illinois safety Jimmie Ward came off the board in the first round.

Among those possible defensive targets remaining on the board are Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan, Missouri DT Kony Ealy (pictured) and Notre Dame DT (and teammate of Zack Martin) Stephon Tuitt.
