Wade Phillips: “I'm Lucky to be Where I Am”

The Broncos defensive coordinator was the head coach of the Cowboys from 2007-2010

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips was not the Denver Broncos’ first choice as defensive coordinator last offseason.

The Broncos set out to interview Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for the position, but Miami stonewalled them. Phillips got the job after that of course, and a calendar year after his hiring, the Broncos are in the Super Bowl on the back of the defense Phillips runs.

After spending 2014 out of football completely, Phillips feels lucky to be where he is, at the mountain top of the professional game.

“I do. I’m lucky to be where I am in some ways,” Phillips said, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “I think I’ve earned a lot of it, but you still have to be lucky. Just look how this year turned out. I didn’t have a job last year. I thought I was going to get one, guys that thought they were going to get a job didn’t get it. This year, pretty much the same thing was happening and I did get the interview at Washington, didn’t get that job. And I was second place at Denver, but it worked out great for me. Sometimes you’re at the right place at the right time.”
