The More You Know: Defensive End Charles Tapper

The Cowboys started Saturday’s draft by addressing a need on defense, selecting defensive end Charles Tapper out of Oklahoma in the fourth round.

The Cowboys need a pass rusher and feel Tapper can immediately come in and compete for a starting job. His strengths include good size and build at 6’3 and 271 pounds. Technique may be flawed in many areas but the team likes his penetrating ability and the ability to set the edge against the run. Tapper was a heavy tackler for the Sooners who can just thump runners.

Scouts feel if Tapper can improve his pad level and hand usage, he can be an effective pass rusher in the pros. He was a Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-American with 7 sacks last season (15.5 over last three years) for Oklahoma.

Bottom line: Raw talent with room to develop.
