Super Bowl Leftovers: No Fines Coming for Marshawn Lynch

A little over a week after Marshawn Lynch became the story of Super Bowl Media Day by giving reporters no story fodder at all, we learn that no fines are coming for the Seattle Seahawks’ running back.

On Tuesday of last week, Lynch showed up for five minutes to fulfill his Media Day obligations, and simply repeated “I’m here so I won’t get fined” almost 30 times. On Wednesday, he did much the same, but changed the chorus to “You know why I’m here” and wondering aloud why any reporters bothered to show up knowing full well that he wasn’t going to say anything.

After these appearances reports surfaced that Lynch could be fined, not for his antics with members of the press, but for wearing a Beast Mode hat--his brand--rather than a Seahawks hat.

But the NFL has decided to leave Lynch alone, saying he fulfilled his media requirements during Super Bowl week, and that the Beast Mode hat was okay because it was made by an NFL licensee (New Era) and featured team colors.

With no fines on the horizon, Lynch can focus on getting a new contract done, the negotiations for which have apparently been going on for some time now.

"We've been in the midst of negotiations for a long time for the future,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said this week, per ESPN. “So we'll see how that goes.”
