Romo on Verge of Joining Elite, Exclusive Quarterbacks' Club

In the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the 49ers at AT&T Stadium, Tony Romo threw into triple coverage. It was his third interception of the game, and it ended any hope of a Dallas comeback.

After the game, it sounded all too familiar. Romo, as he’d done a thousand times before, admitted that he wasn’t good and promised that he’d get better. But even the staunchest Romo fans rolled their eyes. Same mistakes and coming off a back surgery and …

Don’t look now, but Romo has fired a perfect spiral right into his critics’ kisser.

With the Cowboys in the playoffs and Romo having led them to an 11-3 record by throwing 32 touchdowns and only five interceptions since that loss to San Francisco, he’s thrust himself into the conversation for NFL MVP and on the verge of NFL history. With a win Sunday in Washington, the Cowboys’ quarterback will join an elite club whose membership includes only Joe Montana, Tom Brady and Kurt Warner.

The 8-0 Road Club.

Since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978 only five teams have gone a perfect 8-0 on the road: Montana’s Niners of ’84, ’89 and ’90, Warner’s ’01 Rams and Brady’s ’07 Patriots. Of those teams, four went to the Super Bowl and the other lost in the Conference Championship Game. (All five went at least 6-2 at home while the Cowboys finished 4-4).

That bodes well for the Cowboys, who are 7-0 on the road for only the third time in franchise history. Away from Arlington the Cowboys are one of the highest-scoring road teams in NFL history (Brady's Patriots averaged 39 per game), scoring 33 points per game and behind held below 30 only once (26 at Tennessee).

Good news for the postseason: the Cowboys’ offense – via Romo and the running game – travels well.

Maybe even historically well.
