Rogue Jolly Rancher Sidelines S Church

Barry Church missed practice Monday after chipping his tooth on a Jolly Rancher

Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church missed practice on Monday. The reason?

A rogue Jolly Rancher.

Church, who won the starting job opposite the now-retired Gerald Sensabaugh a year ago only to miss 13 games with a torn Achilles, was eating the hard candy over two weeks ago when he chipped a tooth. Church said the tooth hurt off and on through the first week of camp but when he woke up Monday, the pain was unbearable. He took the day off to undergo a root canal but returned on Tuesday.

By his own admission, per the NFL’s official website, Church has "caught a couple of zingers" from teammates and coaches and says from now on, he’ll “stick to the soft stuff.”

The good news for Dallas: It’s a relatively minor mishap, and not a severe injury of the sort that ended what promised to be a great (perhaps breakout) season a year ago.
