Report: Bucs Have New DC & It's Not Rod Marinelli

Former Vikings coach Leslie Frazier is reportedly heading to Tampa Bay to take over the defense

Leslie Frazier, fired by the Minnesota Vikings a week ago, is headed to Tampa Bay to join Lovie Smith’s staff as defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported over the weekend.

This is relevant to Cowboys fans because, through much of last week, rumors abounded that defensive line coach Rod Marinelli--who served as defensive coordinator under Smith in Chicago, before coming to Dallas last offseason--might be interested in the job.

Even if he were interested, as Jerry Jones was quick to point out, the Cowboys would have had to approve the move because Marinelli is under contract through next season.

Of course, the Cowboys haven’t made any changes to the coaching staff yet. But one idea that’s been floated out there has Jones parting ways with Monte Kiffin--the architect of (statistically) the worst Cowboys defense ever--and promoting Marinelli to defensive coordinator.

However, publicly anyway, Jones has been supportive of Kiffin and blamed the injury bug--and not the system--on the defense’s poor showing in 2013.
