Reggie Wayne Doesn't Make Sense in Dallas, But Some Big-Name Free Agents Do

This time of year Cowboys fans play one of their favorite games: It’s called, “Ooh, let’s get him!”

As in, the Colts cut receiver Reggie Wayne this morning. So ... “Ooh, let’s get him!”

This exercise is repeated with each familiar transaction. But while household names might tickle the fancy of fans, it’s players like linebacker Keith Rivers whom teams usually fawn over.

Let’s analyze the realistic chances of the Cowboys signing any of the recognizable players cut this week.

Reggie Wayne – No, a team that just franchised Dez Bryant and signed a long-term deal with Cole Beasley isn’t urgent for receiver help.

Vince Wilfork – Though the team definitely needs help along the defensive line, the former Patriot is a prototypical nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme. He is a solid locker-room voice and his size would be an asset, but he doesn’t feel like a perfect fit because of Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 scheme.

A.J. Hawk – The ex-Packer will soon be looking for a job, but the Cowboys just added Rivers and covet re-signing Justin Durant. So the chances of this happening are about as likely as another March snowstorm.

Trent Cole – This one actually makes sense, if he can put his hand on the ground and play defensive end that is. He starred in the Eagles’ 3-4 scheme as a rush linebacker, but we all know the Cowboys need pash-rush help from its front four. Anthony Spencer is a free agent, Jeremy Mincey was so-so last year and DeMarcus Lawrence is probably still a year away. So, yeah, keep Cole’s name handy.

Mathias Kiwanuka – If the Cowboys want a cheaper, less-effective version of Cole, the former Giant might be their man.

Reggie Bush – Since I believe DeMarco Murray will carry the ball for a team other than the Cowboys next season, this makes some sense. He’s 30 and coming off a disappointing season in Detroit, but he has a successful history with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and is better than any Cowboys’ back not named Murray.
