Playoff Expansion to be Discussed at Owners Meetings

Roger Goodell says playoff expansion will be on the table next month at the owners meetings

The times they are a-changing, and it looks like the expansion of the NFL playoff system is coming--and possibly sooner than we thought.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told Newsday’s Bob Glauber this week that the league’s owners will discuss the proposed expansion at the next session of owners meetings, which kick off on May 20 in Atlanta. A vote on the measure is possible, which would open up the door for the possibility, anyway, of the league implementing the system next season.

Earlier this week, New York Giants owner John Mara said “my guess is that it’s going to pass at some point,” but added that he didn’t expect a vote anytime soon.

"I don't think it's going to happen this year," Mara told Glauber. "I think it's kind of late. We have a May [20th owners] meeting [in Atlanta], but I sense that we'll wait a year before we do that. It hasn't been voted on yet."
