NFL Announces “The Steelers Rule”

The details have yet to be finalized, but the NFL announced on Tuesday that in coming seasons, not just players, but teams could face fines if a series of illegal hits is seen from any particular organization. Naturally, in the way these things happen, the new policy is being called “The Steelers Rule,” after the hard-hitting home of all-time illegal-hit fines leader, James Harrison.

Harrison, who has always been outspoken on such matters as illegal hits vis a vis the NFL’s effort to punish those guilty of illegal hits (which is often Harrison, himself), is unsurprisingly not a big fan of the new rule. He and teammate LaMarr Woodley took their criticism of the rule to Twitter yesterday.

"I'm absolutely sure now after this last rule change that the people making the rules at the NFL are idiots,” said Harrison. Added Woodley, all sic of course: “Thoughts on 'the steelers rule'??? lol im sorry that im not sorry we hit 2 hard”

Steelers’ team president Art Rooney II said he would wait for details to emerge before passing judgment on his team’s namesake rule change.

"I'm not going to say I'm opposed to it," Rooney said, per USA Today. "I would hope that it's something that is used judiciously, that is sort of reserved for repeated type of conduct. I think if it's handled that way, it'll probably be effective. It's still under discussion."
