NFC East Watch: Coughlin Drops Out of Running for Eagles Job

Tom Coughlin had interviewed with the Eagles twice before dropping out of consideration

Just as the New York Giants wrap up their coaching search with a sensible internal hire, another NFC East team’s search will have to continue.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has removed his name from consideration for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job.

Apparently the job was Coughlin’s to take if he wanted it, but with much of the staff he would have wanted to bring to Philly staying put in New York under new head coach Ben McAdoo, he came to the realization that he’d essentially have to build a new staff from the ground up and took himself out of the running.

It wasn’t just staff concerns that led to Coughlin souring on the job, according to Vacchiano. Coughlin also wanted a degree of control over personnel decisions that was large enough to make the Eagles, who just fired a coach a year after giving him full personnel control, bristle.
