Quarterback Mike Kafka won’t be joining the Dallas Cowboys after all.
Kafka, who was being targeted by the team as a sort of insurance policy, with Tony Romo recovering from back surgery and Kyle Orton a possible candidate for becoming a cap casualty, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday. He had worked out at for the Cowboys at Valley Ranch last week.
Dallas has made a habit of carrying just two quarterbacks (Romo and Orton) on the active roster of late, but they were forced to bring former backup Jon Kitna back for a game last year after the herniated was revealed in Romo’s back.
A Northwestern product, Kafka was drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent two seasons. He had short stints with the Patriots and Jaguars in 2013 after spending 2012 out off football, but saw no live snaps for either team.
