McGee To Start Thursday

Wade Phillips announced Tuesday that third-string quarterback Stephen McGee would start Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins, and play most of the game. For the Texas A&M product, this will likely be the most important game of the season, at least in terms of his standing within the team.

Second-stringer Jon Kitna has drawn a good deal of praise from head coach Wade Phillips and owner / general manager Jerry Jones this off-season, but the team wants McGee to move into the second spot, preferably sooner than later. Kitna will turn 40 during this season.

“I think it’s really important,” Phillips said before practice Tuesday. “He made a step forward, we’ve seen that in the last couple games, we saw it as training camp went on. I think he hit eight out of ten in the last ballgame and he seemed to be more comfortable in this pro-type offense.

“As we all know, it takes quarterbacks a while. But we want to give him this opportunity to go out there and do what he can do, prepare and get ready to do that.”
