You could look at it two ways:
Either the Cowboys lost linebackers Bruce Carter and Justin Durant in free agency or the Cowboys allowed linebackers Bruce Carter and Justin Durant to leave in free agency.
Either way, the re-signing of Rolando McClain makes both scenarios more digestible.
With McClain back in the middle, Sean Lee on the weak side and Anthony Hitchens penciled in on the strong side, the Cowboys’ linebacking corps could be in its best shape in a long time.
Durant was a playmaker that never stayed healthy. And Carter’s speed and athleticism never materialized into a dominant force.
For the whiff of Carter in the second round, the Cowboys might have made up for it with a steal of Hitchens in the fourth.
Considering Lee’s litany of injuries and McClain’s kamikaze style, obviously the Cowboys still need help at the position. They signed Keith Rivers, Jasper Brinkley and Andrew Gachkar in free agency and still have Kyle Wilber and Cameron Lawrence as returning veterans.

Again, those pieces are much more appealing with McClain as the anchor. But I’m still not sure drafting another linebacker is out of the question.
