McCann Retained As Exclusive Rights Free Agent

The Dallas Cowboys have sent a letter to rookie cornerback Bryan McCann notifying him that he will be retained by the team as an exclusive rights free agent, ESPN Dallas reports. The designation had to be made by March 3, and means that McCann cannot sign a new deal until a new collective bargaining agreement is struck between the owners and NFLPA, which is looking increasingly far off.

An SMU product, McCann posted 15 tackles after being moved from the practice squad to the active roster in week nine, including one tackle for loss and an interception, which he returned 101 yards for a touchdown.

McCann also averaged 20.6 yards on punt returns, and returned 23 kickoffs for a total of 507 yards. He is eligible to be reserved as an exclusive rights free agent as a player with less than three years of service time in the NFL. Wide receiver Jesse Holley will likely receive the designation as well.
