Martellus Bennett on the Difference Between Martellus Bennett and Dirk Nowitzki

Cowboys’ tight end Martellus Bennett joined the Ben and Skin Show on ESPN Radio 103.3 recently to discuss any number of topics, from football, to the lockout, to, interestingly enough, the difference between he and Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki.

The hosts pointed out that like Bennett, Nowitzki’s interests, particularly in the offseason, extend far beyond his sport--interests such as reading, mountain climbing, learning new languages and so forth.

Per the Dallas Morning News, Bennett responded, “Yeah, but the funny thing is that Dirk can go do all that stuff and it's considered cool, but when I do it, it's like he's not focused (laughter).”

There might be some merit to what Bennett is saying, as the Cowboys’ faithful has been known to get overly worked-up over players’ off-field hobbies (see: Tony Romo’s golfing habit), but then again, Nowitzki has something of a better reputation as a winner around town--and aside from that, he’s not the self-promoter that Bennett has turned out to be, between Twitter, YouTube, etc.

Nonetheless, Bennett sees a similarity to Dirk in their eclectic off-field (or court) interests; he sees the difference in the way the public reacts to those interests.

“I'm just saying ... Dirk's going to fly a spaceship; Martellus is going to fly a spaceship - what an idiot. Dirk is taking cooking lessons. Oh, I'd love to go to a Dirk Nowitzki restaurant. Martellus is taking cooking lessons ... I'm never eating this crap that dude cooks.”
