After two seasons as a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys, Keith Smith is being moved to fullback this offseason.
According to Smith, the idea was broached for the first time after he lined up on offense as member of the scout team last season.
"They asked me, ‘Have you ever played offense?’” Smith said, per ESPN Dallas. “I thought it was just small talk and what not, but I guess they really considered it then. I think it was the last week of the season and [running backs coach Gary Brown] said, 'So, do you think you can handle the running back room?' and I was like, 'Man, put me in a room that’s going to get me on the field.’”
Smith the linebacker had seven tackles and a forced fumble in 15 career games with Dallas. He’ll be helped in his transition by the fact that he played some fullback and tight end in high school, and, while he never saw a snap in a game, worked at fullback some in practice in college.
“It’s not like it’s foreign to me,” Smith said. “I’ve always had good ball skills, so that just came natural to me. I think that’s what’s helped me out with the transition.”
