Jones Says Cowboys Are Improved, But Not Super

The Cowboys are better, but not yet super.

That was the optimistic, yet understated message from owner Jerry Jones Wednesday. It wasn’t long ago that Jones annually chirped about his team and the Super Bowl. Guess even an old dog can learn new tricks.

“Let’s don’t confuse how good we feel about our team with putting (Super Bowl) around the neck of something that if we did know we could beat those kinds of odds, then life would be a lot different for all of us,” Jones told reporters after the Salvation Army’s Inspiring Hope Luncheon at AT&T Stadium Wednesday. “That’s a statement that is real hard to live up to. No one knows it better than we do.”

It’s a perverted role reversal.

Then: Jones would trump his team to get to the Super Bowl while America would roll its eyes at a perpetually underachieving team. Now: Jones is downplaying his team while the experts and oddsmakers hail their chances.

The Cowboys, 12-4 last year and a controversial replay overturn from advancing to the NFC Championship Game, lost leading rusher DeMarco Murray but beefed up their defense significantly with the additions of Greg Hardy, Byron Jones and Randy Gregory.

While Jones won’t gush about a Super Bowl, quarterback Tony Romo casually predicted one last month.

“I understand completely what he’s saying,” Jones said. “He’s got a lot of confidence. He feels good about our defense. No one in our organization was hollering defense more than Tony.”

So while Jones will scream defense and yell about improvement, he’s hesitant to establish grand visions. His super silence is indeed golden.
