Jerry Impressed, Not Surprised by Rob Ryan's Success

Jerry Jones cut ties with Rob Ryan back in January

The turnaround made by the New Orleans Saints defense from last year to this year has been astounding, but Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn’t surprised.

The man who let the Saints defensive coordinator go back in January--Ryan actually learned of his firing via a phone call while he was on vacation, on a beach in Turks and Caicos--attributed the decision to a desire to go in a different direction, and not any shortcomings on Ryan’s part.

Here in 2013, Ryan has led the New Orleans defense to the top ten in the league in total defense. They rank fifth in scoring defense. And it’s worth remembering that this is the same team that set an NFL record for most yards allowed a year ago.

I’ve been real impressed with how well their defense is playing,” Jones told 105.3-FM The Fan this week, via ESPN Dallas. “It doesn’t surprise me. I think so highly of Rob Ryan as a coach, frankly as an imaginative coach and how he imaginatively coaches the game. He can have a lot going on. We wanted less going on, but that doesn’t make it right or wrong. He’s basically implemented it and executed it the way he wants to do it down there, and they’re going to give us fits on Sunday.”
