Garrett Confident In Choice, But “He's Got To Lock The Ball Up”

Tashard Choice was understandably disappointed in his performance against the Rams on Sunday. While rookie DeMarco Murray was busy running for more yards than anyone in the history of the organization, Choice carried the ball just twice for eight yards, and lost a fumble.

Opportunities have always been hard to come by for the Georgia Tech product, and with Felix Jones sidelined with an injury, the Rams game seemed a golden one for Choice. St. Louis did have the worst running defense in the league coming in, after all.

So it’s no mystery that Choice felt that he had missed a chance to earn more carries. Luckily for him, head coach Jason Garrett said on Monday that Choice would continue to get opportunities (though it’s worth noting that Murray will get the start against Philly on Sunday night).

“Defensive players are masters of getting the ball out,” Garrett said of Choice’s fumble, per ESPN Dallas. “You’ve got to hold the ball more securely. He understands that. He’s carried the ball a lot in his career. It hasn’t been an issue for him in the past.

“We’re going to continue to believe in him. But he needs to understand he’s got to lock the ball up because those are difference-making plays in the game.”
