Don't Doubt Cowboys Cornerback Orlando Scandrick

Orlando Scandrick keeps it real.

The Cowboys cornerback doesn’t lack motivation. The proof was after Monday morning’s training camp walk-through at The Star in Frisco when he spit hot fire while surrounded by cameras and microphones.

The topic – never doubt him.

“I feel like all of you all sitting here does,” Scandrick told reporters after practice. “At some point and time, everybody in this circle doubted me. This world revolves around people wanting to see others, you know, kind of fail, so they can have something to talk about. That’s what drives television, that’s what drives news, so for me, I’m just trying to focus. I’m in a good place mentally.”

Scandrick is focused and back on the field after dealing with various injuries during the last two years. He missed the 2015 season with a knee injury suffered during training camp and missed four straight games last year with hamstring and foot issues.

The calendar now reads 2017 and all of the injury issues appear to be in the rear-view mirror.

“Confidence-wise, I’m back,” Scandrick said. “I’m in a good place mentally. I’m in a good place physically. It’s exciting. When you know you can do something but you are not able to physically able to do it because things are restricting you, that’s the hardest thing. There’s nothing restricting me now. I’m fully healthy. I understand I’ve missed about 20 games over the last two years but 16 of them, there was nothing I can do about it.”

The 30-year old has had a good showing during training camp and will be relied upon heavily once the games become meaningful. The Cowboys went the route of youth in the draft this season, drafting cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis, along with safety Xavier Woods. The Cowboys also have third-year safety Byron Jones in the secondary.

With the youth movement, Scandrick is ready to lead but not ready to give up his roster spot.

“I come to work every day and tell them I’m not going to give anybody my job,” Scandrick said. “I’m fully expecting to play another four to five years. It’s going to be my locker for a little bit.”
