Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboy Deion Sanders, a self-described Johnny Manziel fan, has his own theory on why Manziel has become perhaps the most polarizing figure in the 2014 NFL Draft class.
“I love Johnny Football,” Sanders told Roland Martin on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, via ProFootballTalk.com. “See, the reason people won’t accept Johnny Football is because Johnny Football has ghetto tendencies. I love Johnny Football.”
Asked by the host to clarify why he believes the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner exhibits “ghetto tendencies,” Sanders responded, “Because he was successful, he made it, and he let you all know he made it, and he was cocky, he was flamboyant, and he let you know.”
Where Manziel will go in the draft remains pretty unclear. Most experts still say he’s a first rounder, some say second, and a few outliers have him going as late as the third. But he helped his case as a high first rounder with a strong--and fittingly showy--Pro Day in College Station last week.
