Danny Coale Breaks Foot, Needs Surgery

Dallas' fifth-round pick will likely be out until well after the beginning of training camp

Dallas Cowboys’ fifth-round pick Danny Coale didn’t have a great first day of OTAs.

A wide receiver out of Virginia Tech, Coale suffered a fractured left foot on Tuesday and will require surgery, ESPN Dallas’ Todd Archer reports. The timetable for Coale’s return has him rejoining the team well after training camp begins in late July.

Dallas was high on Coale when they selected him, and head coach Jason Garrett said shortly after the draft that the rookie would have a very real chance to compete for the no. 3 receiver spot, which was left vacant by Laurent Robinson. Robinson, the team leader in touchdown receptions in 2011, departed for Jacksonville in free agency this offseason.

“We feel like he has good traits to be an inside receiver also the physical skills to be an outside receiver,” Garrett said. “We’re excited about him at the receiver position, but also as a special teams contributor. Very good career there at Virginia Tech.”
