The most underrated transaction of the offseason? Bringing back Danny McCray.
Crazy statement, I fully realize, because in his second tour with the team he might head to Oxnard this week needing to win a job to make the roster. But after a year with the Bears, McCray is back in Dallas in a situation and position I expect him to excel.
McCray was a special teams monster for the Cowboys from 2010-13. He was their leading tackler and even a team captain. And in the wake of the departures of special teams aces Dwayne Harris and C.J. Spillman, the Cowboys needed to reinforce those units. McCray is the perfect answer.
He’s athletic. Fearless. Trusted in the locker room and by the coaching staff. And, in a pinch, can also play some safety.
I’ve said before that any team with legit Super Bowl expectations wouldn’t have Jeff Heath on its field. I think McCray alleviates that problem this summer.
