Cowboys Kick The Tires On Veteran DL Brian Schaefering

Schaefering spent two seasons playing under Rob Ryan in Cleveland

Veteran defensive lineman Brian Schaefering is in Valley Ranch today, auditioning for the roster spot (and spot along the defensive lineman) left vacant by Josh Brent, who will be placed on the non-football injury list this week.

We need somebody to help us right now,” said Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, per ESPN Dallas. “Jay’s a question mark, so we’re down to five guys. If we get an injury we’re down to four, so we’ve got to get someone in here getting ready to play in case somebody gets injured.”

Schaefering was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Browns in 2008, and bounced between their practice squad and that of the New York Jets that season, before finally catching on with the Browns in 2009. He played that season and 2010 under Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. He was released this past August and has been jobless since.

For his career, Schaefering has 72 tackles and two sacks.
