Cowboys' Defense Not Celebrating No. 1 Ranking

Through three weeks, the Cowboys lead the NFL in total defense

Going into the fourth week of the NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys have the No. 1 ranked defense in football. This is a good thing, to be sure--Dallas is limiting opponents to 250 yards of offense per game, which is about five yards better than our old pal Wade Phillips’ defense in Houston, which ranks second--but it’s also an admittedly small sample size.

Considering that, the defenders in the Cowboys’ locker room aren’t breaking out champagne bottles to celebrate.

It’s not a big deal at all,” said defensive end Marcus Spears, per ESPN Dallas. “Each one of you guys know that this is a marathon, and you can go from the penthouse to the outhouse in this game within a matter of seven days. That’s for our fans and you guys to talk about, but next week, it could all be different if we don’t perform. So we don’t really pay much attention to it.”

That said, this is a confident bunch. Defensive end Jason Hatcher believes that the team has the sort of talent to finish the aforementioned marathon at the head of the pack in terms of defense--so long as they continue to execute.

“I think we’ve definitely got the talent to do it,” Hatcher said. “We just got to keep honing in. It’s just the small things we’ve got to take care of.”
