Cowboys Defense Holds Melvin Gordon to Modest Debut

Gordon had just 11 yards on five carries in Thursday night's preseason opener

On Thursday night the Dallas Cowboys their first look at Melvin Gordon, one of the running backs consistently linked to the team in the build-up to the 2015 NFL Draft, and actually bottled him up quite effectively.

Gordon finished with just 11 yards on five carries. The other Chargers running backs, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver fared better against the Cowboys, with Woodhead taking his one carry or the night eight yards for a touchdown and Oliver going for 53 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

The Cowboys never came close to Gordon in the draft. He went to the Chargers with the 15th overall pick, 12 spots before the Cowboys selected defensive back Byron Jones out of UConn to help in their effort to continue to build the defense.

For whatever it’s worth, Jones finished his debut with five tackles, tied for the team lead on Thursday night.
