Cowboys Bring In Yet Another Kicker

The Dallas Cowboys now have five kickers on the roster.

The team signed journeyman Dave Rayner only hours after he was released by the Detroit Lions on Monday. Rayner will join David Buehler, rookies Kai Forbath and Dan Bailey, and veteran Shayne Graham, who was brought in just last week.

“Obviously if they had the guy they wanted already here they wouldn’t have brought me in, so that’s what I went with,” Rayner said Tuesday, per ESPN Dallas, “and obviously I talked to them yesterday and they were pretty excited about me coming in to try and win a job.”

According to Rayner, coaches have yet to name a kicker for Thursday’s preseason finale, against the Dolphins in Miami.

Rayner was 13-for-16 on field goals with the Lions in 2010, and has a 73.3 percent career average. He was 2-for-3 on attempts with the Lions this preseason.

“It’s a good thing to be wanted at another team right away because it means you did something right at the other place,” Rayner said. “I’m trying to get my bearing quick and do what I have to do.”
