Brees: Payton's Move to Southlake a “Non-Issue”

Since reports began to surface on Super Sunday that Sean Payton had moved his family to Southlake, a flurry of rumors, mostly suggesting that Payton would soon ditch his job with the Saints to rejoin his old team, the Dallas Cowboys, in some capacity.

It seems ridiculous, of course. Payton won a Super Bowl with the team just over a year ago; meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys, the last time we saw them, were in a shambles. Indeed, the Saints’ brass, including Payton himself, more or less called the rumors ridiculous.

Quarterback Drew Brees, who finally got into the conversation in an interview with ESPN’s Melissa Jacobs recently, called Payton’s move from New Orleans to North Texas a “non-issue.”

I think everyone wants to immediately jump to conclusions and all of them are so untrue,” Brees said. “ The first of which is his family and him are having problems.  No, that’s not the case at all.  The other one is he’s taking a job with the Dallas Cowboys.  No, not true either.  People want to immediately jump to conclusions as to why he’s bought a home in Dallas but most players and coaches in the league have a home base, a place where they’re either from or where they spent a lot of time before so they have a solid foundation.

“There’s not a guy who’s more committed to his team and the city of New Orleans than Sean Payton.   I think he’s proven that.”

Payton is currently under contract with the Saints through 2012.
