Eat Hearty Up in the Trees

Anyone who is anyone who has spent time in the Texas Hill Country knows one of the first places you have to go is The Gristmill.  Founded in 1977, the restaurant is situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River and is surrounded by a lot of history.

The three-story building, which houses part of the restaurant, used to be part of the Gruene cotton gin.  The cotton gin was used by area farmers. In 1922, the mill burned to the ground with the exception of one building, which is now the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar.

When visiting, be prepared for a very "Texas" dining experience from the friendly service to the live music and the good food.

You will find yourself not wanting to leave, especially on a cool summer evening.

Make sure you get their early so you can sit in the trees overlooking the river. And, if you're a fan of chicken fried steak, be sure to give theirs a try --  it's a classic.

With the Gristmill placed on the National Register of Historic Places (1975), you may see a famous face or two running around.   When you are done,  sure you stop by Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. It's right next door.
