Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk 2016

American Cancer Society Walk Honors Survivors, Celebrates Halloween

NBC 5 and the American Cancer Society want you to join a team and walk at the 2016 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of North Texas, scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at the University of Texas at Arlington. The walk is open to the public, and teams can register free online at MakingStridesWalk.org/NorthTexas.

The 6th Annual North Texas event will begin registration at 7:30 a.m., with opening ceremonies set for 8:00 a.m. The walk is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and it is free and open to the public.

Family activities at this year’s event will include pumpkin decorating and a costume contest. The walk will be extra festive, being just two days before Halloween. It is a great way for entire families to celebrate the season, while honoring breast cancer survivors, too.

The American Cancer Society created Making Strides Against Breast Cancer community walks in 1993 to build awareness and to fight the disease across the nation. In that time, 10 million walkers have collected more than $594 million. In north Texas last year, approximately 4,000 walkers raised more than $430,000. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among U.S. women other than skin cancer, and is the second leading cause of cancer death. The Society projects that 16,800 new cases will be diagnosed this year in Texas women,

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than 3 million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress, nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're finding cures as the nation’s  largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. For more information, to get help or to join the fight, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org/fight.
