A Free “Art In Context” Lecture at the Kimbell Art Museum

Wednesday, October 16

NBC 5 and the Kimbell Art Museum invite you to a free “Art in Context” Lecture, on Wednesday, October 16, at the Kimbell Art Museum.

Babette Bohn, Ph.D, professor of art history at Texas Christian University, will present a free lecture titled "She worked not only beyond any woman, but also beyond any man ....": Women Artists in Early Modern Bologna in the Pavilion Auditorium.

From antiquity through the Renaissance and beyond, most European artists were men. This imbalance between the genders was the product of many social and institutional practices that made it difficult for women to gain artistic training, so Babette Bohn's discovery that at least 68 women artists were active in early modern Bologna is truly astonishing. This presentation will explore some of the factors that made the Italian city of Bologna unusually receptive to creative women, touching on a few women artists who achieved particular success.

Dr. Bohn is the author or co-author of nine books and numerous essays on Italian art, most devoted to Bolognese art of the early modern period, particularly drawings and prints. These include two books on prints by the three Carracci and other Bolognese artists (1995 and 1996); a comprehensive study of Ludovico Carracci's drawings (2004); and an exhibition catalogue for a show Bohn curated at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, on the drawings of Guido Reni (2008). In recent years, she has published extensively on the women artists of Bologna, the subject of her current book project, titled Women Artists, Their Patrons, and Their Publics in Early Modern Bologna, now in press at Pennsylvania State University Press.
