End Summer Hunger with United Way of Dallas

United Way of Metropolitan Dallas in partnership with TangoTab, a free mobile-app that connects socially conscious consumers with great local restaurants, recently launched the ‘End Summer Hunger’ campaign to raise money, generate awareness of summer hunger, and encourage eligible families to utilize the summer meal sites.

More than 262,000 Dallas County kids – a population that could fill AT&T Stadium three times – are at risk of going hungry every day this time of year. With the community’s support, we can work to end summer hunger and ensure that students who rely on subsidized meal programs during the school year continue to get daily, nutritious, filling food during summer months.

The community is invited to join the ‘End Summer Hunger’ campaign by downloading the TangoTab app, use the code “FEEDNTX” every time you dine out, and TangoTab will donate to the ‘End Summer Hunger’ campaign, so when you eat, they eat!

Member organizations of The Dallas Summer & Supper Council, led by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Texas Hunger Initiative – Dallas, have come together to increase awareness of numerous free summer meal programs throughout North Texas, and stress the importance of good nutrition for kids throughout the year.

Studies show food insecurity in children affects their cognitive abilities and hinders their development. United Way and its partners will work to feed bodies, minds and futures, as they try to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.

Childhood hunger statistics are startling. In Dallas County, more than 70 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. However, statewide statistics show that only 14 percent of eligible Texas kids take advantage of summer meals programs.
