Join NBC 5 and the Alzheimer's Association - North Central Texas Chapter at the Alzheimer's Association Spring Symposium: Translating Knowledge Into Treatment, Care and Prevention Wednesday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Arlington Convention Center.
The day-long event for family caregivers and health care professionals is the chapter’s largest education event of the year, offering up-to-date, useful information on a variety of topics pertaining to care and support from experts in the field. The symposium will offer CMEs, CNEs and continuing education for a variety of other disciplines with the goal of providing timely information regarding dementia care to improve patient outcomes.
The keynote address will be given by Pamela Duncan, family caregiver and Alzheimer’s advocate. Duncan will share her story of raising teenagers while caring for her husband, Scott Duncan, who is now in the late stages of the disease. Duncan is also the mother to the “Duncan Twins” who made world-wide news coverage about their journey as young caregivers and their wedding dress photo shoot with their father, Scott Duncan.
The correlation between traumatic brain injury and dementia will be highlighted and discussed by Dr. Holly Hinson. Hinson’s research at Oregon Health and Science University is focused on inflammation of the brain after TBI and helping clinicians provide the correct medical therapy for those affected.
Dr. Heather Snyder, Ph.D, senior director of medical and scientific operations for the Alzheimer’s Association, will present sessions about the impact that the disease has on women and updated research on prevention studies. Snyder will also explain the role of vascular factors, such as heart disease and stroke related disorders in Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.
In addition, local experts in Alzheimer’s disease, law, psychology, dementia care and more will offer breakout sessions on topics of interest to family members who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and for healthcare workers who specialize in dementia care. Representatives of the Alzheimer’s Association and businesses serving the needs of caregivers and persons with dementia will have information available from symposium attendees.
Registration fees are $100 for professionals needing continuing education credit and $50 for professionals that do not need CEs. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. There is no charge for family caregivers to attend. There is a suggested donation of $25 to cover the cost of food and materials.
