Education Is Freedom Hosts Financial Aid Workshop on January 20

Open to all parents and students

Last year about 6,000 low-income high school seniors in Dallas County did not file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), leaving up to millions of unused federal and state aid that could have helped them go to college.

In an effort to decrease that number, Education is Freedom is partnering with NBC 5 to host a Financial Aid Workshop held Wednesday, January 20, at W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that is open to all grade levels and parents. Workshop topics include the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA), and private scholarships. Sessions will be held in both English and Spanish. There will be a mobile computer lab set up for families who want to create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, one of the new changes being implemented into the FAFSA process that serves as your legal signature when completing the application.

Students are often discouraged by the seemingly long and confusing process of applying for financial aid.  This workshop will help students and parents understand the documents and requirements needed to successfully complete and submit the FAFSA and TASFA in a timely manner.

Financial aid is often first come, first served and some schools may not consider students for scholarships unless they have submitted a FAFSA. β€œIf you don’t fill out the application, you are not eligible for grants, loans, and scholarships that are sponsored by the federal government, the Department of Education has $150 billion to give out every year, if you don’t go through the process, you are not eligible for that money.” said Kevin Malonson, Director of Market and Campus Operations at Education is Freedom.

Since 2002, Education is Freedom has helped guide over 100,000 students and families through the college process. Education is Freedom and NBC5 will be hosting additional Financial Aid Workshops throughout the year. For dates and locations please visit, www.educationisfreedom.org or call 214-432-8550.
