Winter Storm Leaves Panhandle Covered in Snow

Amarillo gets foot of snow, schools, city offices close

A winter storm in the Texas Panhandle has left behind a foot of snow and forced dozens of school districts to cancel classes or delay opening.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Amarillo area until Thursday evening.

Forecaster Randy Bowers says Amarillo received 12 inches of snow since Wednesday afternoon. He says the worst of the storm moved on by Thursday morning, as light snow lingered.

Amarillo police on Thursday reported no major wrecks or problems associated with weather. The Amarillo Independent School District, with more than 33,000 students, canceled classes Thursday.

City offices in Amarillo and Canyon were closed for the day due to the winter storm.
