Summer Goes Out to Roar of Thunderstorms

At least 5,000 homes and businesses in North Texas were still without electricity Tuesday morning after storms roared through the area Monday night.

Oncor reports about 16,000 customers lost power at the peak of thunderstorms that packed hail, heavy rain and damaging winds gusting as high as 72 mph.

A 17-year-old girl may have been hit by lightning at an apartment complex near Highway 121 and Haltom Road in Haltom City. Her mother, Tammy Harris, said she was walking across the parking lot with her daughter when a blinding flash knocked a cup right out of the girl's hand.

"It was scary," she said. "It was just a big old bright blue light. We didn't know if it hit her or not, because she went down to the ground."

Her injuries are not believed to be serious.

A Cleburne police dispatcher said a gust of winds toppled a tractor-trailer rig in a parking lot at 7:50 p.m. She said there were injuries, but none were severe. A spokeswoman at Harris Methodist Cleburne hospital said no one was hospitalized from the incident.
