Stay Safe in Triple-Digit Temps -- They're Here to Stay
TXU, ERCOT taking steps to keep Texans cool, safe during hot summer months

Typically, we don't hit 100 degrees in North Texas until July 1 on average, but when it arrives it usually sticks around for the duration of the summer. NBCDFW Meteorologist Steve MacLachlan has forecasted a high of 102 for Friday and Saturday and 99 on Sunday. The current heat wave has prompted a heat advisory that is in effect until at least Saturday evening.
Due to the high temperatures, TXU has accelerated its summer moratorium on disconnects. Effective immediately, the elderly, ill and low income can call TXU at 1-800-242-9113 for assistance and to insure they will not be disconnected during times of extreme heat.
On Wednesday, The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) reports the Texas power grid is in good shape. We came close to topping the previous high of 62,339 megawatts of use when in the 5 o'clock hour Texas hit 61,641 megawatts. Ercot said they do not expect any blackouts or brownouts.
According to the National Weather Service, excessive heat kill on average 175 Amercans each year -- more than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and lightning combined. At least one death this week in Dallas was heat related. So, how do you stay cool with temperatures soaring into the triple-digits? TXU advises the following:
- Do not turn off the A/C unit
- Wear loose clothing
- Drink plenty of water
- Use ceiling fans
- Close shades and windows during the day
- Clean A/C filters
- Use the auto fan setting on your A/C unit
Additionally, because men sweat more than women they are more susceptible to heat illness. So stay hydrated!
