Mayfest Closed Remainder of Friday Due to Storms

Mayfest is officially closed for the rest of the day Friday due to storms, officials say.

The annual festival on the banks of the Trinity River in Trinity Park in Fort Worth began as scheduled Friday morning.

The event was temporarily evacuated at about 4 p.m. Friday before organizers made the decision to shut it down for the day at 5 p.m.

If an evacuation is required again due to the threat of severe weather, patrons will be able to find safety at the nearby Will Rogers Equestrian Center on University Drive at Crestline.

Mayfest organizers said cthey will reopen the gates Saturday morning.

Mayfest organizers are closely watching Friday’s forecast, with storms that could threaten the second day of the four-day festival.

For years Mayfest has had a severe weather action plan to get patrons out of harm’s way as quickly as possible. It was last put into use in 2012, when volunteers evacuated the 33 acres of Trinity Park used for the festival in about 30 minutes.
