State highway officials said Friday the $165 million highway project along Interstate 30 near the new Dallas Cowboys stadium is on schedule and on budget one year after construction began.

The project from Cooper Street to Ballpark Way is set to be completed in winter 2010.

Traffic has been diverted to temporary lanes while workers dig up more than 1 million cubic yards of dirt. The new highway will be 18 feet lower.

"By lowering the main lanes, we're able to easier build a bridge across the span," said Val Lopez, spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Collins Street bridge is being rebuilt, and new bridges are being added at Center Street and Baird Farm Road. New HOV lanes will run from Arlington to Dallas.

Eventually, plans call for I-30 to be expanded from three to five lanes in each direction from east Fort Worth to the Dallas County line.

There is no money or timetable for the long-term plans, which could cost $400 million.

The Transportation Department released a video showing what I-30 will look like in the future.

Crews expect to keep the highway open during the current construction.

"We're trying to take the 'nightmare' out of 'logistical nightmare,'" Lopez said. "We're trying our best."
