A van transporting 12 prisoners rolled over in Fort Worth Wednesday morning after being struck by another vehicle.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Department van was making its daily run from the Mansfield jail to the downtown county jail when it was struck by another vehicle, causing it to roll over on northbound east Loop 820 near Sun Valley Drive

The van came to rest on its roof near the concrete median where rescue personnel worked for several hours to free the passengers trapped inside.

Sheriff's department spokesman Terry Grisham said the victims were still being evaluated Wednesday afternoon.

He said one prisoner suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung and would be admitted to the hospital.

The deputy driving wore a seat belt but the prisoners did not have one, Grisham said.

"They got thrown around pretty good," he said.
