North Texas Set to Receive Millions for Transportation Projects
Construction could finally start on Southwest Parkway
For a third time, the board of aldermen has declined to take action on the plan that would affect the busy Route 8, Interstate 84 area.
Construction could start this summer on the Southwest Parkway and other long-delayed and much-needed highway construction projects in North Texas, transportation leaders say.
Washington's economic stimulus package could create hundreds of highway construction jobs in North Texas and save drivers countless hours stuck in traffic.
North Texas stands to get at least $130 million for road construction projects, even as much as $730 million if the state partners with regional leaders to share some of its stimulus money.
"We'd like to see a whole bunch of people going to work with the economic recovery funds" said Michael Morris, of the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
The biggest project on Tarrant County's wish list is the Interstate 20 interchange for the long-delayed Southwest Parkway. In Dallas County, the money would most likely be used to add extra lanes on Interstate 635 between Interstate 35 and Central Expressway.
Using stimulus money for some projects will free up state funds for others in North Texas, giving the region even more bang for its buck.
