Arlington Traffic Woes: It Can Only Get Worse

The tens of thousands who were in town for baseball and amusement park fun snarled traffic in Arlington, and drivers say it's only a preview of what's to come.

The Texas Rangers can thank the Yankees for drawing a capacity crowd -- 50,000 fans -- to the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Monday. And thousands more played at nearby Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor.

"Traffic was hellacious," said one fan.

"I was expecting to drive right in," another fan said. "It's been stop-and-go for a while."

Drivers said they fear the mid-day traffic nightmare is a sign of what's to come when Cowboys Stadium -- with more than double the capacity of the Rangers' ballpark -- opens.

Ongoing construction adds to the traffic woes. Work on Interstate 30 between Cooper Street and Ballpark Way won't be completed until fall 2010.

The Cowboys play their first preseason game in August, and the team says construction along State Highways 183 and 161 will be completed by then.

But drivers will be tested when a series of high-profile concerts come to Cowboys Stadium in June.
