One person was killed and five others injured Friday in a fiery multi-vehicle collision on northeast Loop 820 and Mark IV Parkway in Fort Worth, police said.

The chain-reaction collision of five cars happened during the evening rush hour commute and backed up traffic for miles.

A Mobility Impaired Transportation Service (MITS) bus from the Fort Worth Transportation Authority  (The T) was the last vehicle in the chain, rear-ending a car that had stopped short in a wreck, said The T operations manager Tony Johnson.

Chopper 5 video showed two burning wrecked vehicles along with the The T's MITS bus.

Compressed natural gas powers the bus, but the tanks were intact and did not appear to contribute to the fire, Johnson said.  Fort Worth Lt. Kent Worley had stated earlier that the fire was fueled by the natural gas.

Firefighters stood aside as flames rapidly poured from the bus, and then began spraying the vehicle with fire-retardant foam.

One person who was driving a Jeep Cherokee died at the scene and two other people, with critical burn injuries, were taken to Parkland Hospital, MedStar authorities said. Two other people were transported to a Fort Worth hospital.

The bus driver, Ronnie Ware, received minor burn injuries to his hands as he helped the lone passenger get off, Johnson said.  The passenger was not injured, and Ware was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the first driver in the chain of vehicles is believed to have caused the wreck, and was the only person not injured.
